HIKING DISTANCE: from 2 km to 8 KM, HIKING LEVEL: Gentle, Moderate and Challenging options, We meet at Ngwenya Glass Factory and drive (in own car) ta few kilometers to the start of the walk. This is into Malolotja Nature Reserve from the Ngwenya side, close to Ngwenya Glass. From here we visit the Lion Cavern, the oldest mine in the world, and then walk along the Ngwenya Ridge. This hike is linear trail ‘out-and-back’ so a gentle walk for those not wanting to climb the peaks. For those wanting a more challenging walk there are two different peaks along …

Off the beaten track: Mlilwane Wanderung abseits der ausgetretenen Wege This is a new walk for the Society, exploring the old railway tunnels that were built to carry iron ore from Ngwenya to Mpaka in 1963.  We will drive to Aloe House within Mlilwane Sanctuary and walk from there. After approximately 3 km walk towards the old entrance, and a gentle steady climb along the Lusushwana River, we turn off to the left, cross over the railway line and start to explore two of the three tunnels. A long but gentle hike over the massive granite domes that extend beyond the Sibebe outcrop.  They are equally impressive if not more, thanks to the barren expanse.   The start is at Brackenhill and the route follows the track along the dam, over the saddle with views towards the Tea Road, down into the rain-forest, known for the delicate Streptocarpus flowers and onto bare rock with impressive views on Sibebe.  This view of the southern part of Sibebe will help you understand why Sibebe might be the second largest exposed granite rock in the world.   We will also …
