Sibebe Hike 2020 – Natural History Society of Eswatini
September 6, 2020 @ 08:00 - 13:00 UTC+2
30E – 40EThis ancient outcrop of granite in Pine Valley has many faces. The bald granite rock face as seen from Panorama Drive is formidable and forbidding. With a history of 2.6 billion or 2600 million years, SIBEBE has many stories to tell.
The route will take us up one of the original trails. We will start at the Sibebe Gate House at the end of the tar road in Pine Valley. We will take the path on the left past the homesteads and then start to ascend Sibebe on a short, steep rocky path. After approximately 1 km and an altitude of 1180m, we will cross the tar road and continue on the trail up the side of the mountain and past a narrow, horizontal cave. After another 1km of ascent, at an elevation of 1330m, we come to the fence of the Sibebe Resort where there is a gate that we can pass through. Here we are at the top of our climb and the rest of the walk to the edge of the rock face is over gentle flat grassland. We have to pass by Sibebe Resort reception and will each need to each pay E30 as a contribution for conservation to the Community Trust. We will explore a cave on our way to the end of the plateau and the edge of the iconic Sibebe rock face. We will return on the other side of the valley, a long flat walk across grassland and next to a series of springs and a stream, until we reach the main gate of the resort. At this point those wishing to have refreshments at the resort can leave us and return on their own.
Despite its age SIBEBE is very solid and a safe place for an exciting outing, though the ascent can’t be called anything else but a hard slog. Total distance is about 12km.
Carry, in a suitable backpack, a supply of water, snacks, a large brimmed hat and sun protection for a five hour outing. We request that participants bring at least 1.5 liters of water and recommend a hiking pole.
Traveling from Mbabane: 20 min each way. Members – no charge, guests E40. Conservation fee of E30 payable by all. Please have the correct amount ready.
Meet at the Theatre Club in Mbabane at 7.30 am for departure at 7.45 sharp or at the Sibebe Gatehouse at the end of the tar road in Pine Valley at 8.10.
