The Ngwenya Mountain Peaks in the Malolotja Nature Reserve, the crocodile shaped ridge near the border at Ngwenya, are the second highest points (1838m) in Eswatini, only surpassed by Emlembe at Bulembu at 1862m.  This is a relatively gentle walk with scope for extension in distance and altitude.

The walk starts from a parking spot beyond the open cast iron ore mine into the more tranquil scenery of the Malolotja Nature Reserve and the magnificent slopes of the Ngwenya Mountains and to look in awe at the splendid views through the valleys into South Africa.

We will not go to the actual peak, which is on a bit of a plateau that limits the view.  Instead we will climb the hill in the picture which gives a lookout from Steysndorp in South Africa, the Makhonjwa Mountains and Emlembe, through Mkoyo and Motjane to Maguga and beyond.  After a level walk on the old Jeep track, there is a sharp rise up the hill, followed by a more gradual descent along a ridge at the back of the hill.  The return is an almost level hike along the track.

This is a typical Highveld walk over open rolling grassy slopes with rocky outcrops.  Game may be encountered towards the Mhlangamphepha Valley.

Meet at the Theatre Club at 7.30 for a prompt departure at 7.45am or at the Ngwenya Malolotja gate at 8am.

Bring a backpack, adequate water (1.5lt), snacks, sun protection, including a hat and entrance fees of E 25 pp to Malolotja at the Ngwenya gate.

Travelling 30 minutes each way + walking 4 hours, 9km distance and rise in altitude of about 225m

Non-members are welcome.  There is a guest fee of E40 used for conservation projects.
