NHSe walk – Sonntag, 1 November 2020, Mgogodla Ridge Eswatini

E40
Mgogodla Ridge, Pine Valley

: MGOGODLA Ridge, Pine Valley: Leaders John Lowsby and Caroline Sullivan. A beautiful ridge walk on the Western Highveld close to Mbabane.  The impressive “BACKBONE or SPINE” ridge opposite SIBEBE is un-named on the SG map.  It has a height of 1400 metres.  The views from there onto the massive granite dome of Sibebe (1488m) are just stunning, with the Mbuluzi River marking the lowest points in Pine Valley (1000m). After crossing the Mbuluzi river the route will follow paths for a slow ascent to the saddle at the southern end to gradually reach the top and the many interesting vantage points on the ridge and a colourful hanging rock.  Enjoy the spring flowers which should be flowering all along the route. The view of Sibebe from “the other side” will totally change your concept of the big BALD ROCK in Pine Valley. On this outing you may visualise what the claim is based on that SIBEBE is the second largest granite outcrop in the world. (Is it true?). This is a round-trip outing with the descent on the Mahabedle side.  It will take about four hours with a gradual climb of 400m on the way. Meet at the Theatre Club at 7.30 for departure at 7.45 sharp. Non-members are welcome. There is a guest fee of E40 which is used for conservation projects. Bring an adequate supply of water (1.5lt), refreshments, a broad brimmed hat, and sun-screen.  Hiking poles are recommended. For more information please email nhse@realnet.co.sz or what’s app 76028066.  Weather update will be placed on the What’s App group.
